Statement from MCLP Chairman, Brandon Slayton, on the Phoenix City Council / Phoenix Sun’s Arena Deal:
Today the Phoenix City Council plans on voting whether they will give the Phoenix Suns $150 million dollars for arena renovations. The Maricopa County Libertarian Party opposes all corporate welfare as the practice of robbing from the poor and giving to the rich.
Local government should not be involved with private enterprise; it is wrong to force taxpayers to foot the bill of an entertainment venture. Especially when the current Sun’s owner has done nothing to improve the team, through his own investments, that would be expected from a professional and successful sports team.
It is wrong for the Phoenix City Council, seven weeks before new council leadership is elected, to consider giving the Phoenix Suns millions of dollars when that money could go to more critical needs within the city of Phoenix. We encourage a no vote on this deal.
The Maricopa County Libertarian Party is committed to ending all forms of corporate welfare immediately.
